Gutter Cleaning - The lowdown!

When you think of cleaning your gutters, it's probably safe to say that you are not thinking of fire safety!
However, gutter cleaning is a critical step in reducing fire risks around your home, especially during the dry summer months and especially if you live in a wooded area with tree lined streets and gardens. By removing combustible materials from your gutters, you are eliminating a major fuel source that embers from any nearby fires can easily exploit.
Clean gutters not only to help prevent fires but also for when the wetter months arrive to prevent potential damage caused through water ingress from blocked drainage.
Why poorly maintained gutters represent a fire risk.
Dry accumulation: dead leaves, pine needles and nesting materials dry out and become highly flammable.
Ignition sources: discarded cigarette stubs tossed from upper windows, or, more likely airborne hot embers from a garden fire or BBQ can ignite dry roofs and gutters in an instant. Spreading flames to your roof, your home and potentially neighbouring properties.
How often should homeowners clean their gutters to prevent hazards?
The frequency of gutter cleaning largely depends on the environment surrounding your home and on the climate. In general:

At a minimum, clean gutters twice a year. Once in late autumn/early winter once the leaves have dropped, and once again in late spring/early summer.

Homes near trees: if your property is surrounded by overhanging trees, clean your gutters every 3 - 4 months.

In high fire risk areas or during times of prolonged high temperatures or drought.

After storms or high winds: inspect your gutters promptly as these events often deposit large amounts of leaves and debris.
